Trace Route lets you find out where the problem might be

Trace Route is computer program that lists network hosts visited by a packet on the way to its destination. It is very useful for network debugging. In Wndows, we need to use the command prompt to run the program.

We use our friends over at Haughton Hall as an example of how we can find out where the problem might be and how to then send that information to us here at Coos Creations.

Read on for a graphical walk-through guide to running a tracert / Trace Route program.

Run the Command Prompt

In Windows, select [start] in the bottom left corner of your screen and then select 'Run...'

Type 'cmd' (short for 'command') in to the 'Open' box and click OK:

The command prompt is now running:

Launch the Trace Route Program

Type 'tracert' follwed space a space and then the domain name you wish to check into the command promt. For this example, we are checking the mail server for haughtonhall.com. Other examples are 'tracert www.cooscreations.com', 'tracert images.google.com' or 'tracert www.microsfot.com'

The Trace Route program then begins - checking each of the hosts that are involved in tranferring information from our servers, to your computer!

Trace Route Complete

When the trace route program has finished, a message reading 'Trace Complete' will display. You are now ready to extract the content to send to us!

Copy the Trace Route Information

Right-click anywhere in the command prompt window and select 'Select All'

The selected text (all of it!) will turn white, with black text (inverted). Now press 'enter' on your keyboard to copy the text into your clipboard

Send us the Information by E-Mail

Open a new e-mail with the subject 'Tracert results'. Right-click in the body of the e-mail and select 'paste'. You should now see the Trace Route program results in the body of the e-mail. Send it our way!
